Edinburgh Club Triumph at GB World Cup

On the 19th – 20th September many of The Edinburgh Club’s full-time performance athletes were fighting in the GB World Cup 2009 held in the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham. The event is extremely prestigious, this year attracting judo superpowers such as Brazil, France and Russia. With current Olympic medallists taking part in the event it was never going to be easy, but The Edinburgh Club didn’t disappoint.

Sarah Clark stormed through to win the gold medal in the -63kgs, picking up Player of the Tournament after some beautiful ippons.

Euan Burton followed suit, winning 4 of his 5 fights by ippon in the -81kgs. Above is a photo of Euan in the final wearing white on his way to the gold medal.

In the heavyweight women’s category, Sarah Adlington defended her previous GB World Cup title with an undefeated streak earning her the gold medal.

James Millar, -60kgs, fought extremely well and was rewarded with a well-deserved bronze medal in an extremely competitive category where no other British fighter won a fight let alone a medal.

Heavyweight Christopher Sherrington was almost in the medals, missing out narrowly with a 5th place.

Congratulations to all the other Edinburgh Club fighters who represented the club and Great Britain.

Great Britain topped the medal tally with 4 golds, 3 of which came from Edinburgh Club players. The results speak for themselves!
